PhpBB2 was the predecessor of the present-day phpBB3. After a year of development and extensive testing, phpBB 2.0.0, dubbed the "Super Furry" version, was released on April 4, 2002, three days later than intended. Doug Kelly joined the team shortly afterwards. In February 2001, phpBB 2.0.x began development entirely from scratch the developer's ambitions for phpBB had outgrown the original codebase. įeatures of phpBB include support for multiple database engines ( PostgreSQL, SQLite, MySQL, Oracle Database, Microsoft SQL Server), flat message structure (as opposed to threaded), hierarchical subforums, topic split/merge/lock, user groups, multiple attachments per post, full-text search, plugins and various notification options (e-mail, Jabber instant messaging, ATOM feeds). Available under the GNU General Public License, phpBB is free and open-source. The name "phpBB" is an abbreviation of PHP Bulletin Board.
